Our laboratory was established on August 1st, 2016, in National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), and named Big data Analytics and Social Intelligent Computing Laboratory (BASIC Lab). The focus of our research is on data science for heterogeneous data including biological sensors, images, videos, graphs, texts, and transactions. Specifically, data science is a multifaceted field used to gain insights from complex data. For example, social media data collection, data cleaning, machine learning, and visualization can be applied to analyze the customers’ data and provide insights for e-commerce. Although data science looks sexy, it is challenging to apply it to different kinds of data because of 1) large-scale streaming data, 2) noisy and incomplete data, 3) complicated interplays between different data sources, and 4) lack of ground truth. Therefore, to tackle the challenges, the goal is to design elegant algorithms to effectively and efficiently gain insights from the data. Different kinds of approaches are proposed according to the data characteristics, e.g., deep learning, tensor decomposition, dimension reduction. However, we do NOT expect you to learn the technologies only since these technologies will be out-of-date one day. Try to learn the abilities to learn new things and solve unsolved challenges.
